About this listen
Sid Halley, a private investigator, has a new left hand, having had a transplant since his last appearance in Refusal. After receiving death threats, an ex-jockey trainer friend calls Sid to ask for his help, but Sid has his own problems to deal with, like recovering from surgery and saving his crumbling marriage.
When his friend’s stable yard is torched, horses killed and the friend is found dead, Sid can only blame himself for not helping sooner. The police think it’s suicide, but Sid is not convinced after his friend’s terrified phone calls. Heavy with a guilty heart, Sid starts to investigate and soon finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy that cuts to the very heart of the integrity of British horse racing.
Can Sid figure out what happened to his friend, or will he be the next one that the killer targets?

Pompous and disappointing
Sadly, Felix Francis proves once again that he should not be trading off his father's success. A pompously read book by a reader who should have been directed more adeptly. The annoying long pauses within sentences made a favourite character in Syd Halley turn into a pompous git, when I'm sure that wasn't the intention.
The story lacked plausibility and kept 'mansplaining' how normal electronic objects in the 21st century worked - Syd did not need to tell us every time he answered his phone in the car while driving that he was using the car's audio and he certainly did not need to explain how to 'air drop' a video file. There were so many bad examples of 'how to' or 'explain the past' it got tedious.
We should have left Syd in hospital having his transplant and never resurrected him again. I liked him then . I do not like him very much at all now. What a shame!

Overly descriptive
Too much explaining and descriptors filling in the gaps. The narrator makes Syd and other characters sound pompous and arrogant (although given the style of writing there wasn’t much option). I didn’t like Syd.
