Publisher's Summary

An original novel set in the Halo universe — based on the New York Times best-selling video game series!

October 2559. With the galaxy in the suffocating grip of a renegade artificial intelligence, another perilous threat has quietly emerged in the shadows: The Keepers of the One Freedom, a fanatical and merciless Covenant splinter group, has made its way beyond the borders of the galaxy to an ancient Forerunner installation known as the Ark. Led by an infamous Brute named Castor, the Keepers intend to achieve what the Covenant, in all its might, failed to: Activate Halo and take the last steps on the path of the Great Journey into transcendence.

But unknown to Castor and his new, unexpected ally on the Ark, there are traitors to the cause in their midst — namely the Ferrets, composed of Office of Naval Intelligence operative Veta Lopis and her young team of Spartan-IIIs, who have been infiltrating the Keepers to lay the groundwork for Castor’s assassination. But with ONI’s field operations now splintered and cut off by the Guardian threat, Veta’s original mission has suddenly and dramatically escalated in scope. There’s simply no choice or fallback plan — either the Ferrets somehow stop the Keepers or the galaxy faces an extinction-level event....

Answers many questions and poses many more

This story does an excellent job tieing so many background elements in the Haloverse together and has me speculating and excited for how they'll proceed in the future, either into Halo Infinite, or into other books which must in some way tie into the game-verse.
This novel has reignited the possibility of the Covenant returning in either the games or the books in a new and much more interesting form than the version presented in either Halo 4 or 5.
The Banished have been fleshed out once again from a new angle and gives them both a more menacing look and a more political perspective.
The other elements, such as the Keepers of the One Faith were also a really great arc of faith devolving with the revelation of the truth of Halo, and the sense of betrayal and odd camaraderie that came with it.

I'm also excited for potential outcomes for Intrepid Eye... I felt that there was strong implication that she was still alive.

The only negative, in my opinion, was the narration.
Overall, Aida did a good job, and at the risk of sounding sexist, I generally don't like female narrators because I feel like they do quite a poor job on male voices, whereas male narrators do an okay job on female voices.
But I was pleasantly surprised in the regard that I thought Aida did a good job on the male voices.
Ironically, I thought she did a poor job on the female voices. Some of them, at times, had a shift in voice and there was crossover.
The only female voices that I thought were distinct in any way were Lopez and Intrepid.

Overall, I enjoyed the novel and it has amped me up for Infinite and all future Halo projects.

The first Halo book to make me cry

I loved this book, and I didn't expect to cry when I started listening to it.

Meet Olivia G291 la cholita

Definitely one of the best halo books ever released. Narrator does a great job on this one. So much better than Shadows of Reach

Another excellent Halo offering from Denning.

There's no other universe like Halo.

It's a fiction which walks a compelling line between majestic space opera and classic military sci-fi, with a history of strong if not outstanding novels despite its roots in the video gaming world, and Denning really gets what makes it special to its hardcore followers. He has a strong understanding of the technical lore, military jargon and world-building that characterizes it, and uses that to create an atmosphere of authenticity and immersion that makes his stories feel truly at home in the Halo universe. This novel continues the story of his characters from prior works and brings them into contact with some legendary figures and places from the Halo universe. If you like Halo and its extended fiction, it's a worthy stepping stone on the grand path of its many interlinking narratives, and well worth the listen.

The reader did particular good voices for some of the core characters and was always clear, which is especially commendable due to some of the acronym-laden or otherwise arcane and opaque terminology the Halo universe is prone to.

Great story, Poor performance

Fantastic story to complete this saga. The story flowed fluently and left me wanting more. Unfortunately the performance was difficult to ignore. All voices except Vadar were done poorly and made it difficult to visualise the characters. i would suggest Simon Brick conduct the next book as he is able to be distinguishable with all human and alien characters.

Really really Weird narration

The story was good despite it being a plot that we have had twice before. The problem is the narration is so uncomfortable to listen to. She puts on this odd sensual tone while ‘voicing’ alien characters. Really ruined the whole experience for me which is a shame because it is a pretty good book. I unfortunately don’t have a lot of time to read books however I would suggest getting a hard copy of this book.
