About this listen
Wellington, 1885: Tally Ho doesn't need to go to school because she is going to be a fisherman or cart driver or butcher boy like Harry Crawford. Taking her hero's advice, she runs away.
Sydney, 1917: A burned woman is discovered on the banks of the Lane Cove River. Nobody knows who she was until the police find out a boy's mother went missing that very same weekend, and his stepfather, Harry Crawford, is not who he seems to be.

Evocative
This is a story based on fact, though I imagine that the percentage fictionalised is high. Whatever the factual accuracy, it is a poignant evocation of antipodean times and places long lost. More than this, it is a reminder that people were trans and gay (or German!) living in a world that only wanted to know them as criminal freaks on the cover of Truth. The narrator's slightly lazy Aussie diction fits the character well, though some of the Maori names were mangled.
