Publisher's Summary

Unearths the stories of the little-known but powerful elder women in European myth and folklore, inspiring listeners to radically reimagine the last decades of their lives as the most dynamic of all

Western folklore and mythology are rife with brilliantly creative, fulfilled, feisty, and furious role models for aging women, despite our culture's focus on youthfulness. In her exciting new book, mythologist and psychologist Sharon Blackie explores these archetypes, presenting them in a way sure to appeal to contemporary women. Drawing inspiration from these examples, women can reclaim midlife as a liberating, alchemical moment rich with possibility and their elder years as a path to dynamic power.

After menopause, women can expect to live another forty to fifty years, making this stage of life longer than childbearing years. As Blackie describes it, midlife is the threshold to decades of opportunity and profound transformation, a time to learn, flourish, and claim the desires and identities that are often limited during earlier life stages. This is a time for gaining new perspectives, challenging and evolving our belief systems, exploring our calling, uncovering meaning, and ultimately finding healing for our accumulated wounds.

Perfect Bible for the elder years

I loved the exploration of the archetype s of feminine aging. It was also good to reconnect with the ancient stories of the UK and my forebears. Growing up in Australia with English, Scottish and Irish ancestors we have lost a lot of the cultural identity from a world before Christianity and Colonisation this book felt healing.

Love this!

I loved this book from start to finish. It sang to my soul and offered insight for those of us that don’t have mothers, aunts or elders around.
Beautifully written and I loved that it was read by the author 🌸

A meaningful book with deep insight.

Sharon Blackie offers us new considerations and insights by guiding us back to our ancient shared past stories. There were many a-ha moments while listening to this book that gave me meaningful messages and helpful ideas. I highly recommend this book especially as an audiobook. Sharon has a clear mistake free and very pleasant narration voice.

Captivating

I loved this book, written and narrated by Sharon Blackie. It was entertaining, enchanted and honest. I am grateful for the work Sharon is doing, in bringing to light, reformed ideas of the aging feminine and of elderhood.

Beautiful insightful story

I thoroughly enjoyed this tale. Full of stories and the authors personal perspectives. Although The Hag is at least 20 years away for me, it is an insightful perspective into elderhood.
