Belfast, 1985. Amid the Troubles, Detective Sean Duffy, a Catholic cop in the Protestant Royal Ulster Constabulary, struggles with burnout as he investigates a brutal double murder and suicide. Did Michael Kelly really shoot his parents at point-blank range and then jump off a nearby cliff? A suicide note points to this conclusion, but Duffy suspects even more sinister circumstances. He soon discovers that Kelly was present at a decadent Oxford party where a cabinet minister's daughter died of a heroin overdose, which may or may not have something to do with Kelly's subsequent death.
New evidence leads elsewhere: gun runners, arms dealers, the British government, and a rogue American agent with a fake identity. Duffy thinks he's getting somewhere when agents from MI5 show up at his doorstep and try to recruit him, thus taking him off the investigation.
Duffy is in it up to his neck, doggedly pursuing a case that may finally prove to be his undoing.

Another gripping book
This series really gets a hold of you. Sean Duffy is a very flawed individual but you feel some sympathy for him and can admire his dogged determination. The background to the "troubles" is very well written, explains why things happened but doesn't get in the way of a fine procedural detective story. The narrator does a great job.

Another excellent audible written by Adrian McKinty.
The Narrator, Gerard Doyle, with his wonderful Irish Accent will take you on another thrilling ride, exposing
the high pressured life of the Irish Police during the troubled times in Belfast during the mid 1980’s. A fast paced thriller with lots of music references, booze, twists and turns. I loved every minute of this third Shaun Duffy Detective series.

loved it, enjoy narrator and the dry, wry Irish humour, but still wondering how he survives so much vodka

Duffy tangles with the Americans again
Complex & satisfying. The Duffy novels get better & darker. Fantastic plotting, as Duffy high on cocaine & whisky seeks truth, justice & tenderness. Great narration.

Another gripping Duffy instalment
McKinty has maintained the high standards of story, character and setting that he set in the previous three Duffy novels. The historical setting of the troubles is handled beautifully and the reader is immersed in the northern Ireland of the '80's as the story itself is intrinsically enmeshed in the political and social order of place and time. Duffy is a little older and a little wiser as he navigates being a catholic Detective Inspector in the predominantly protestant RUC CID and he remains reflective, self-aware and with an ethical compass that is perhaps more utilitarian than it is traditionally catholic.
Once again, Gerard Doyle does a magnificent job as the narrator. He really is faultless.
All in all, this was another terrific novel and I sincerely hope that we haven't seen the last of DI Sean Duffy.

Each book in this series gets better and better
McKinty and Doyle evoke an era so well. I grew up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles and these books bring back a lot of memories. Intricately plotted and a joy to listen to .

Love them all but this one is epic!
Do yourself a favour and head back to Northern Ireland during the troubles. Characters are amazing and the plots are as big as they can be! Thanks Adrian McKinty and a special mention to Gerard Doyle for superb narration.
