Learn about Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. The Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp was set up by the United States Government as a detention facility for “unlawful enemy combatants” captured in the “war on terror”. Opened in 2002, it is located on the US Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the US, the Congress granted President Bush the authority to “use all necessary and appropriate force” against those who committed the attacks. Two months later President Bush issued an executive order, which provided that any non-citizens believed to be involved in international terrorism could be held by the US military indefinitely. Under the terms of this order, these “unlawful enemy combatants” would be tried by a military tribunal and that they would have no right of appeal to any courts: US, international, or otherwise.

Editorial reviews
An excellent introduction for those seeking to understand the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention center. In smooth, even tones, and with a relatively even-handed approach, performer Luca James Lee presents the legal and political background behind the center - from the reasons for its creation outside U.S. jurisdiction, to the reasons it stays open despite Obama's 2009 executive order to close the camp. Lee also describes the use of military commissions, and details the cases of the very few prisoners who have actually been convicted of a crime. This is a great crash course for those seeking some basic familiarity with this disturbing, yet important, topic.
