About this listen
Heat, humidity, and homicide are things veteran Detective Sawyer Key expects to encounter on his first day with the Savannah Police Department, but the hostile reception from his new partner catches him by surprise. Sawyer isn't a stranger to heartache and recognizes that Royce Locke is a wounded man who's reeling from a devastating loss. Relentless and patient in all things, Sawyer is determined to make the new partnership work.
Savannah, Georgia, is known for her quirky people, oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and antebellum architecture. Beneath the Southern charm and hospitality, festering hatred and violence is soaring with the summer temperatures. Locke and Key find themselves at the epicenter when their first case involves the death of a former shock jock who appears to be the victim of vigilante justice.
Opposites in nearly every way, the two detectives set aside their differences to take back their city and restore law and order. From this reluctant truce, an intense attraction grows that will either tighten or shatter their tenuous bond. The fuse is lit, the clock is running, and the zero hour is upon them. Ticktock.
Contains mature themes.

Great beginning but..
The narrator is not so great! The limited vocal range of the narrator made the book very hard to listen to. Strange odd accents which seem to change from character to character. Women sounded like dudes, and some of the dudes definitely had the feminine vocal.
It’s also made working out who, whom, which character was actually talking!
If it wasn’t for the excellent story of this trilogy, I wouldn’t be continuing
Hoping the story progresses and involved as this one, and fingers crossed the narration is somewhat better!

Good story, bad narration
I like this author’s books overall, and this is an interesting series. Sadly, the narration is very badly done. It is overall monotonous and the few attempts at giving American Southern accents to a couple of the characters for no apparent reason why some and not others who are explicitly local (um hello, the setting is Savannah Georgia) are just awful, For some reason, Locke has been given an accent that sounds like a John Wayne imitation that is so bad that it made me cringe throughout the audiobook. I’ll only read the others in the series, not listen.

Very light police procedural romance!
Detective Sawyer Key isn’t expecting the hostile reception he receives from Royce Locke, his new partner on his first day with the Savannah Police Department. Both men have baggage but develop a mutual respect as they tackle a murder investigation. Key tries to fight his attraction for Locke, but within days he realises Locke is also fighting his own attraction for Key.
Told in the third person from Key’s POV, this police procedural romance was like Hazard & Somerset lite. It touched on similar themes but lacked complexity and angst: the clues to the (two) straightfoward murder cases seemed to fall into Locke & Key’s laps very easily and every hurdle was quickly vaulted. On the romance side, it started out as an enemies-to-lovers but by day 2 Locke had apologised and by day 3 they were getting hot and heavy, so it was pretty much instalove … and in the way of instalove novels, it felt rushed. Look, I didn’t mind it—it’s not at all taxing so it’s an easy read—it just wasn’t rich or satisfying. 🎧 The other reminder of Hazard & Somerset is Tristan James’ audio narration, which can be somewhat wooden but you do adjust.
