Hamburg, Anfang der 1930er Jahre. An der Großen Elbstraße versucht die Ärztin Vicki zur Haiden, der Not zu trotzen. Ihre Arbeit im Krankenhaus Eppendorf hat sie wegen einer Krankheit aufgeben müssen. Hoffnung gibt ihr aber, dass ihr Bruder Benno mit seiner Tochter Florence aus New York zurückkehrt. Voller Eifer machen die drei sich daran, das Haus zu renovieren. Florence, die in den USA Medizin studiert hat, findet auch einen fähigen Architekten, in den sie sich obendrein verliebt. Doch Aron Salomon ist Jude, und auch in Hamburg kommen die Nazis mit aller Gewalt an die Macht.
