About this listen
Three books of best-selling military sci-fi action. If you love heroes and starships, you will love to stand with Commander Jacob T. Grimm. You’re in the Navy now!
Idealistic Navy Lieutenant Jacob Grimm just wanted to honor his mother’s sacrifice in the last great war. When he’s forced to return fire and destroy a squadron of ships to save his own, he thinks he’s the hero....
Until they discover the ships are full of children.
Disgraced and denied promotion, Jacob’s career is over. That is until the head of ONI needs a disposable officer to command a battered destroyer on the rim.
There’s just one problem: Interceptor hasn’t had a CO in months, and the ship is a mess. Worse, the system he’s assigned to is corrupt and on the verge of all-out civil war with the Alliance.
However, no one told Jacob he was disposable.
Pirates, smugglers, and Caliphate spies complicate the situation and one captain with an old ship can’t enforce the law, let alone stop anyone.
The single greatest discovery of all time is about to change intergalactic politics forever. If Jacob doesn’t find a way to succeed, then it won’t just be the end of the Alliance, it will be the end of freedom for humanity.
From USA Today best-selling author Jeffery H. Haskell, you won't want to miss the special edition omnibus of books one to three in the hit Grimm's War series.
"Against All Odds is classic space fleet military science fiction in the tradition of David Weber, with memorable characters and thrilling action. Haskell is a new shining star in the genre." (Rick Partlow, author of Contact Front)

Poor Muslins get flogged again.
This is a reasonable story but lack any imagination from the author. 900 years in the future and they are still using triggers and loaders on turret guns🤦♂️ LED lighting 🤦♂️ manual controls to steer the ship🤦♂️
Plus be ready for the battle between Christianity and Islam.
Narration was good.

loved it, good story, interesting characters, excellent reading and voices. Hopefully by the 29th century humanity will have outgrown the whole religion thing.

Great characters, but often simplistic story lines
Threes are fun books and the characters are good. But the story is often a bit generic and repeats. It’s the age old America vers the Arab world and the evil tech companies but in space. Down trodden commander against the brass. All ending with an impossible to win, but somehow do, space battle at the end. Followed by captain grim almost being discharged, but then being pardoned and promoted. But something is keeping me reading so there are some good points too.

Disappointing
Reading reviews generally suggested that this would be a good read/listen. It has some elements that were good. The action sequences were entertaining and the general storyline was reasonably good. Certainly also the narrator did a good job although I didn’t like his voice early on - things improved though and he did well I thought.
Undermining these positives was a preachy undercurrent and a dubious particularly dumb enemies. Choosing to vilify a religious group seemed unnecessary given the futurist nature of the narrative. It might have been more sensitive to have created an alternative religious group as the enemy.
The constant worshiping by the crew of their commander Grimm was exhausting and just seemed overplayed and unlikely.
The writing style generally seemed a little clumsy in some places and a bit pedestrian.
Certainly lacking the sophistication or depth of Joel Shepherd’s Spiral Wars saga which I rate highly.
About halfway in I felt like not continuing, but having invested time and money I continued a little reluctantly on….. sigh.
