About this listen

During the last part of the nineteenth century, the detective story took off as a popular genre as literary magazines vied with each other to draw in readers with gripping page-turners by the likes of Arthur Conan Doyle, G. K. Chesterton, Guy Boothby and Wilkie Collins. This collection brings together some of the great detectives of the Victorian era, from the master sleuth himself, Sherlock Holmes, to the mild mannered Father Brown, to the feisty J. G. Reeder.

  • The Wedding Guest by Guy Boothby
  • The Magic Casket by R. Austin Freeman
  • The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
  • Diamond Cut Diamond by F. Britten Austin
  • The Game Played in the Dark by Ernest Bramah
  • Murder under the Microscope by William Russell
  • The Purloined Letter by Edgar Allan Poe
  • The Hammer of God by G. K. Chesterton

Narrator is unbearable

I have listened to female narrators several times especially for Patricia Cornwall books. However, the narrator consistently ends each sentence on a high pitch detracting from which ever story you want to listen to. Disappointing. I would like to swap this one. The authors are quality and I will need to look at another edition that includes Edgar Allan Poe.
