Gottfried Bermann Fischer, der 1897 geborene Schwiegersohn und Nachfolger des legendären Verlegers Samuel Fischer, hatte zunächst als Arzt gearbeitet. 1925 trat er in den S. Fischer Verlag ein, zu dessen Autoren Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse und Arthur Schnitzler gehörten. 1936 musste er mit seinem Verlag ins Exil gehen, zunächst nach Wien, dann nach Schweden und in die USA. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gründete er den S. Fischer Verlag in Frankfurt neu. Bermann Fischer starb 1995 in seinem Haus in Camaiore, wo Thomas Assheuer 1988 mit ihm gesprochen hatte.
