About this listen

Is faith in Jesus enough for salvation? Perhaps, says Matthew Bates, but we're missing pieces of the gospel. The biblical gospel can never change. Yet our understanding of the gospel must change. The church needs an allegiance shift.

Popular pastoral resources on the gospel are causing widespread confusion. Bates shows that the biblical gospel is different, fuller, and more beautiful than we have been led to believe. He explains that saving faith doesn't come through trust in Jesus' death on the cross alone but through allegiance to Christ the king. There is only one true gospel and one required response: allegiance.

Bates ignited conversation with his successful and influential book Salvation by Allegiance Alone. Here, he goes deeper while making his acclaimed teaching on salvation more accessible and experiential for believers who want to better understand and share the gospel. Gospel Allegiance includes a guide for further conversation, making it ideal for church groups, pastors, leaders, and students.

Game changer!

This is what we need in the church today! He presents the message of the gospel of Jesus the saving king and our response to it so clearly and extensively from the scriptures!

An interesting discussion on the gospel and faith

This book is part of a discussion on what is the gospel and how the Greek word pistis should be translated (traditionally translated 'faith' or 'truth,' but Bates argues for 'allegiance').
Bates expanded gospel summary is that "The gospel is the true story of how Jesus the Son was sent by God the Father to become the saving king who now rules forever at his right hand through the sending of the Holy Spirit, fulfilling God's promises in Scripture."

It would be nice if audible could add names to the chapters in the app rather than just stating chap 1, chap 2... The chapters should be:
1) Intro
2) Getting the Gospel Right
3) Not Faith but Allegiance
4) The Full Gospel of the King
5) Bridge
6) Grace in Six Dimensions
7) Faith Is Body Out
8) How Works Are Saving
9) Taking the Allegiance Challenge
10) Appendix: summary

I find Bates is intentionally provocative at times, and I think this detracts from some otherwise good points (not that I entirely agree with Bates).

Sometimes the audiobook lists several references which isn't well suited to an audiobook. That being said, the accompanying pdf is useful.

McKnight, The King Jesus Gospel; and Wright, Simply Good News (both available on audible); take a similar position to Bates.

Brilliant

This book was refreshing, it’s not typical of what you would normally expect of soteriological scholarship. The content feels like it was genuinely sort out and thorough, not to placate or bolster presuppositions of the widely held persuasions. I would recommend this book to anyone who is seriously interested in the topic of the gospel and salvation.
