About this listen
The story of a young man fighting to recover from a devastating psychotic break and the mother who refuses to give up on him.
Zack McDermott, a 26-year-old Brooklyn public defender, woke up one morning convinced he was being filmed as part of an audition for a TV pilot. Every passerby was an actor; every car would magically stop for him; everything he saw was a cue from 'The Producer' to help inspire the performance of a lifetime.
After a manic spree around Manhattan, Zack, who is bipolar, was arrested on a subway platform and admitted to hospital. So begins the story of Zack's freefall into psychosis and his desperate, poignant, often darkly funny struggle to claw his way back to sanity, regain his identity, and rebuild some semblance of a stable life.
It's a journey that will take him from New York City back to his Kansas roots and to the one person who might be able to save him, his tough, bighearted Midwestern mother, nicknamed the Bird, whose fierce and steadfast love is the light in Zack's dark world.
Before his odyssey is over, Zack will be tackled by guards in mental wards, run naked through cornfields, receive secret messages from the TV, befriend a former Navy SEAL and his talking stuffed monkey and see the Virgin Mary in the whorls of his own back hair. But with the Bird's help, he just might have a shot at pulling through, starting over, and maybe even meeting a woman who can love him back, bipolar and all.
Written with raw emotional power, humour, and tenderness, Gorilla and the Bird is a bravely honest account of a young man's unravelling and the relationship that saves him.

Well rounded
This book blurs the lines between what it means to be mentally well and unwell and rightly so. Zack speaks from an authentic place of honesty and with his vulnerability expresses the mundane, hilarious, disturbing and meaningful moments of his journey. Love is a central theme in the underlays of his writing and this book leaves you with a strong impression of a capable person, aware and surrounded by support that stems from the empathy of those he loves and is loved by. Thank you Zack, I appreciate this book more than I would have a Netflix stand up comedy special.

Outstanding
. . . . . A rare glimpse into what it’s like to go through a manic psychotic episode and come out the other end. Does not romanticise mental illness, just shows it for it’s true brutality and the tornado it creates, sweeping up everything in its site, including your loved ones, your job, your reputation, and your accommodation. Beautifully written, with out a hint of self pity or self indulgence. Just stating the facts. What a guy.

Brilliant
I couldn’t put this down and can’t wait for the movie if they make one.
It’s inspiring to me as I am a Mother with a son with a mental illness too so it was very helpful to me to keep hope and never give up even when it seems bad.
Thank you for sharing your story Zack
