About this listen

It wasn't just one person who went missing; it was two people. Two very different people. They were there, and then they were gone, as if through a crack in the sky. After that, in a small town like Goodwood, where we had what Nan called 'a high density of acquaintanceship', everything stopped. Or at least it felt that way. The normal feeling of things stopped.

Goodwood is a small town where everyone knows everything about everyone. It's a place where it's impossible to keep a secret.

In 1992, when Jean Brown is 17, a terrible thing happens. Two terrible things. Rosie White, the coolest girl in town, vanishes overnight. One week later, Goodwood's most popular resident, Bart McDonald, sets off on a fishing trip and never comes home.

People die in Goodwood, of course, but never like this. They don't just disappear.

As the intensity of speculation about the fates of Rosie and Bart heightens, Jean, who is keeping secrets of her own, and the rest of Goodwood are left reeling.

Rich in character and complexity, its humour both droll and tender, Goodwood is a compelling ride into a small community torn apart by dark rumours and mystery.

Light hearted entertainment

Holly is a terrific writer, with a great turn of phrase, excellent humour and lovely descriptions of 90s Australia. However felt the story didn’t really amount to much and while it was compact and mostly engaging, it felt more like a lazy summer read than a work of substance. Great narrator.

Faultless

Loved every second from start to finish. Been a huge fan of Holly’s lyrical and vocal talent for years and Holly’s ability to make me erupt in laughter and tingles at the visual images her writing took me to was nothing short of overwhelmingly wholesome.
You truly are brilliant Holly

Beautiful Story

This was a charming description of a small country town in the 90s. The characters were described affectionately and the connection to the surrounding country was well made. The storyline was strong and I really enjoyed this book.
The only distraction was the reader; her constant inflections at the end of sentences almost made me turn this book off.

I tried

I’m sorry. This story was just too slow and by chapter 8 I still hadn’t connected with the characters. The reader was okay. She was supposed to be young and that came across. I just couldn’t stand the minutiae of all that detail about inconsequential information.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Loved this story. Such a unique and colourful portrayal of small town characters, which were totally believable and so entertaining. The narrator did a fabulous job of bringing the text to life. The mystery? Well, it’s a good one

Vivid storytelling

This was a tonic for me. I loved the way the author gradually built up the story. I loved the delivery too. An interesting and somehow comforting read.

Superb! Great read!

Oh, I absolutely loved this book! Set in 1992, in rural NSW Australia, was so significant to me, as I grew up in a similar place and was 21 in 1992, so the same pop culture, slang and attitudes were about. I loved the dry humour and many times, laughed out loud whilst reading! The narrator was excellent, with great time and authentic expression. The story was happy, sad and wistful. Really enjoyable book.
