Brought to you by Penguin.

Winner of the Guardian Children's Fiction Award, Goodnight Mister Tom is of one of the best-loved stories set during the Second World War.

Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian is the unforgettable story of young Willie Beech, evacuated to the country as Britain stands on the brink of the Second World War. A sad, deprived child, he slowly begins to flourish under the unlikely care of grumpy old Tom Oakley. But then his new-found happiness is shattered by a summons from his mother to come back to London. As the weeks pass by, Tom begins to worry when William doesn't answer his letters, so he goes to London to find him, and there makes a terrible discovery.

Love it

Love, love, love that there’s finally an unabridged audiobook available for this fantastic novel. The narrator’s tenancy to pause after saying a character’s name is a little annoying, and his realisation of 11/12YO George, with a fully broken man’s voice, is mildly annoying, as is his inability to lighten his voice enough to make female characters feel fully fleshed out. These are minor quibbles though and certainly don't detract significantly from the overall interpretation of the book.

Takes a bit but worth it

I read this in grade 6 about 35 years ago. I had forgotten a bit of the story and didn’t remember the large character detail in early chapters but as an adult it came together well in the end.

Description of characters

Lovely story that I read at school over 30 years ago and wanted to listen again. Did not disappoint.

A different narrator would be appropriate

I’ve listened to this book again and while the narrator does a very good Mister Tom and he reads the book very well - I don’t think he was the best person for this audiobook as his voices for the children weren’t great. It was a little funny at times, George sounds like an 80 year old man!
