A very sweet story

A great, at times quite sad and dark, touching story. The relationship built between the main characters is very sweet and felt very organic.

The reading was great, with the accents and portrayal of the characters adding significantly to the story

An absolute must

Although there were some obvious edit points, this abridged version is an excellent book and the narration is second to none. Brilliant performance.

short but powerful

This book is on the shorter side of what I like to get but it was fantastic.
What a roller coaster of emotions and I just loved it. Highly recommended
Only issue I have was the voice work was great for male characters but sounds weird for females as it was such a manly voice. and at times was hard to distinguish between characters but other fantastic

Beautiful story

My son and I listened to it in the car. We didn't want to get out of the car as we were gripped by the story.

Excellent telling of a beautiful story!!

Excellent rendition of this Family favourite. Patrick Malahide captured the emotions that well over in this book beautifully and my Children and I have greatly enjoyed listening to this on a long car journey. 5 Stars all round!!

Be aware

Not all of the written words are translated into spoken text. This version of the book skips over chunks of information and even excludes the postscript.

As an English teacher, it is good to be aware that students reading this (listening) may miss some vital information about the text.

Otherwise, a very beautiful story.

Original is great but this abridged

One of my all time favourite books, but this abridged version removes so much of the story that it doesn't feel the same.

One of the first missing moments is when Willie is out in the graveyard his first day. There's zero mention of him finding the child's overgrown grave, clearing it and then protecting both it and himself from Sammy. The audiobook completely omits it and leaves it at Willie just protecting himself because his mother taught him that dogs are vicious and poisonous.

It's a small moment and there are so many more that are missing, but it's one that really shows that he's a sweet kid despite all the abuse he's been through

Anyway, the narrator is decent and of course the full book is fantastic. I'll still listen to this one when I'm trying to fall asleep. But I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't already read the full book
