About this listen

It was in Mexico that he first learnt how to exploit his extraordinary good looks and to develop his natural winning ways with women. By the age of 17 his companions had nicknamed him 'The Golden Fox', and his reputation as an irresistible lover was established.

A country in conflict. A family torn apart.

Isabella, Shasa Courtney's beloved daughter, enjoys all the freedoms London in the '60s can offer. So when a beautiful, charming man appears and sweeps her off her feet, why would she resist? But her lover is no simple admirer - he is Ramon de Santiago y Machado, a KGB operative known as Golden Fox, and his mission is to recruit her as an agent and uncover her father's secret business dealings.

With this knowledge, Ramon and his comrades plan to end white rule in Africa, whatever the cost. Isabella must make a choice about who she will betray - her father and her country or her son and the man she loves....

A Courtney Series adventure - book 5 in the Burning Shore sequence.

Slow start, great ending.

I struggled a little for large parts of the story. Not sure if this was just me or the story itself. I did get right into it eventually though. Parts of the story seemed so similar to the first in the Apartheid series, which I maintain was much better. The narration was superb as always.

Totally involved me!

I really enjoyed this book. I got so involved that it felt like I was one of the Courtney family watching on! The accuracy of the fine detail and obvious research for the book is outstanding even though it was written some considerable time ago.

A really enjoyable listening experience with a superb narration by Sean Barrett. Well worth it.

Incredible action

Wilbur Smith does it again in yet another amazing Courtney novel. The espionage factor was interesting, too.

Great story telling and research into history.

When the narrator whispers or speaks in a low voice I cannot understand what he is saying

Another awesome Wilbur Smith story

As always, a gripping story of the complicated early apartheid history of SA where a nation dedicated it resources to ensuring its survival when the manipulation of communism warped the worlds view of a beautiful land.

It highlights the injustice of its past as the story engrosses the listener along the twisted history of the ANC, Rhodesian Scouts, the political intrigues of atomic policy & chemical warfare…

The Courtney wealth and privilege with a touch of compassion & humanity.

BEAUTIFULLY narrated as always …..

One of my favourite authors / narrators

I rarely find one of the Courtenay series disappointing but, as yet, no experience of his other works. A great theme to write to. This one, also great and everything I expected from Wilbur Smith and his increasingly convincing mater narrator Sean Barrett.

What did he say?!!

I’m sorry, but I just could not get into this book.
I dunno if the story was good or not because I could not get passed the low grumbling monotone narrative.
I couldn’t tell who was speaking, be it man woman or horse!
The narrator should be limited to “how to sleep” books.

As a truckie, I listen to books over the rumbling of my truck engine, & it was hard to tell the difference between the truck & the narrator.

First time it’s ever been an issue for me in 30 years of listening to books, & that includes Thomas Harris’ narrative of Mason Verger in Hannibal, & Mason had no lips!!

I enjoy Wilbur Smith, & I assume the book would’ve been up to his normal standards, but I’ll never know.
I couldn’t get into it.

I only scored the story a 1 star ‘cos I didn’t get far in the book.
Such a shame.
I’ll definitely be screening future books for this particular narrator, to avoid disappointment again.

What the hell???

Hello! You can’t have an intelligent woman, clever enough to be a Doctor & a member of parliament who is soooo stupid when it comes to a handsome man. I know love is blind but COME ON! Seriously, this character was so unbelievable it was ridiculous! I loved the previous books but this one just annoys Wilbur. 🤨
