About this listen
Going Dark is the debut crime thriller from former covert specialist Detective Sergeant Neil Lancaster.
Tom Novak is a troubled soul with a dark and bloody past. A former refugee, Royal Marine and member of the elite Special Reconnaissance Regiment, he now finds himself struggling with the deadening routine of day-to-day policing. When he is deployed undercover to infiltrate a gang of people traffickers, things go badly wrong. Faced with an impossible choice, his cover is blown, and he finds himself on the run from the Serbian mafia and even his fellow police colleagues. With no-one to trust, and his enemies using all the resources of the state against him, Tom has only one option: to Go Dark.

Fast and Action packed
I like this book. I tend to listed to authors such as Tom Wood and Greg Hurwitz. This book was interesting right from the start. I found it hard to stop listening including waking up early and listening. Was sorry when it ended but still enjoyed it immensely.
I can't wait for the next in the series.
It was believable and the primary character was not invincible so very believable. Good to see that whilst Tom was seriously impacted by the trauma of his childhood he was still a high functioning human with strong feelings and loyalty to his family, even though they were his adopted parents.. His loyalty and was demonstrated again at the end of the book and it is refreshing to see people who are principled and proud and not tempted by status and money.
As I said I liked this book.

A gripping story... one you need to get to the end
This book oozed great research & faultless, factual information. The story itself had many twists and turns and holds the reader, even to the point of going back and listening again to check your understanding. I can't wait to listen to the next book!
One small issue lies in the choice of narrator. Whilst his accents are brilliantly done, his stilted reading takes some getting used to!

Great book
I wasn’t going to listen because the comments about the narration put me off. I decided to purchase because I really enjoyed the other series by same author. After about 20 mins I got used to it. I found the whole experience was great. Now onto book two and have to adapt to new narrator!

Good story
Great story and well written. Unfortunately, the narration let it down. Flat and monotonous overall, which made it difficult to get into. Some of the characterisations were good though these were few and far between.

Good Story, Poor Narration
The story is good and I'm looking forward to the next book, with a new narrator, thankfully.
I hate to leave a bad review, however the narration could do with improvement. I had to translate to Angus King or David Monteath in my head to make it work.
I do recommend this listen, but could only do it at speed 1.10 - 1.25 to make it work.

Riveting !
Loved it. A reader who enjoys Psychological Suspense stories, this one is an absolute must read !
The Narrator puts a real edge, with his voice, into the Characters.
The Author has fast become a Favourite. Already have purchased Book No 2.
And I cannot wait to read it.
The interweaving of Good against Evil, makes this a number one read !

Novice with potential
Having listened to the Max Craigie books prior to this one, it’s apparent that Neil Lancaster’s writing has improved since this first outing. There are some very obvious writing problems such as word repetition, clumsy phrasing and the very odd use of ‘was sat’ when sitting was required. Given his background, the author relies a little too much on procedural detail and physical descriptions rather than character dialogue
to drive the narrative, however it is also the authenticity of the action and process that makes this an interesting book.
Having said all of the above, it’s still an engaging listen, despite the aggravating narration. It’s a good thing that Angus King reads the Max Craigie books, as the narration on this one was bizarre with very strange inflections and some horrendous accents.
