Godset Stepantjikovo er Dostojevskijs første større roman efter hjemkomsten fra Sibirien. Centralt i bogen står snylteren og hykleren Foma Fomitsj Opiskin, der i mange år har ageret tjener og herregårdsnar for en kynisk general, der ydmygede og nedværdigede ham. Da generalen dør, flytter Foma, sammen med generalens enke og en række andre snyltere, ind på godset Stepantjikovo, der ejes af generalindens søn: den godmodige oberst Jegor Iljitsj Rostanjev.
