About this listen
For one to rule, the other must die.
AD 312 is a year of horrific and brutal warfare. Constantine's northern army is a small force, plagued by religious rivalries, but seemingly unstoppable as they invade Maxentius's Italian heartlands. These relentless clashes, incidents of treachery and twists of fortune, see Maxentius' armies driven back to Rome.
Constantine has his prize in sight, yet his army is diminished and on the verge of revolt. Maxentius meanwhile works to calm a restive and dissenting Roman populace. When the two forces clash in the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, there are factors at work beyond their control and soon they are left with carnage.
There is only one way Constantine and Maxentius' rivalry will end. With one on a bloodied sword and the other the sole ruler of Rome....

As good as it gets!
I find that finishing yet another masterpiece that has Simon Turney's name associated with it is bitter sweet. I think at this point I would pay for a McDonald's napkin with a lymric he wrote would be money well spent so I definitely do not have an impartial view on this work (Marius' Mules is leaps and bounds above all others). That said, with teaming up with a previously unknown to me author in Gordon Doherty I was hopeful that the pure, intense and visceral experience that Simon's work evokes would not be diminished. I was not disappointed!
This series, from the first word, fantasticly narrated by the great Jonathan Keeble, hooks you in to a time and place that is some of the most terrible in European history. Likable and relatable characters that simply will not give a good/bad feeling told from opposing points of view. The battle scenes are second to none and the flow is a continuous stream that will not give you a chance to take a breath. If you fall victim to 'one more chapter before bed' like I do I suggest a coffee diet to supplement this!
Absolutely one of the best series available on audible. I cannot recommend highly enough. Thank you gentlemen for this work. 10/10 all the way!
