About this listen
Shortly after the death of King Solomon in 931 B.C., the Promised Land is divided into two separate nations: Israel in the north, and Judah in the south. Hezekiah is the second son of King Ahaz of Judah. As he comes to power, he must navigate a troubled path to reunite his wayward people with Yahweh.

Good story with a timely message
I enjoyed this retelling of a poorly known Bible story coming alive with multiple different voices and perspectives throughout the story, and it contained some helpful lessons about faithfulness to God. I did object to the objectifying descriptions of female helplessness and desire while recognising that this does probably represent the culture of the time. I also note the thread running through the book about the slippery slope of compromise and the word ‘liberal’ being used to reflect the evil idolatry of the time. I felt this was meant to make a more contemporary point that didn’t really hit home for me, and missed the nuance of the conservative/liberal divide today and its reasons. Compromise can be valuable; it just depends what one if compromising on. Core principles of faithfulness to God must be maintained, however there must be took forever growth and a change in understanding. There is always a balance between conservative fundamentalism and progressive truth-searching that must be maintained.

Absolutely Amazing!
Lynn has brought this portion of biblical history to life - one of the very best biblical historical fictions I have ever read. Couldn’t recommend it more. Thank you Lynn.

I was hooked despite myself
I have had this series of Lynn Austin’s for a while now and couldn’t get hold of the story. I decided to try again, got past the point I stopped on before, and ended up enjoying it immensely.
