Publisher's Summary
Many looked on Gladys Aylward's expedition to mainland China as foolhardy and dangerous. It was.
On her own, as a single female, she carried her passport and other documents, along with the only money and belongings that she had, in a small briefcase with a teapot and a saucepan tied to the handle.
After having purchased her one-way ticket to China, she left the United Kingdom with a single-minded determination to do what God had commanded her. She knew she was meant to go to China - even if no mission was prepared to support her.
Unconventional is the only way to describe this journey to the country that would eventually become her home. A theme that would continue throughout her mission work in China where she thwarted authorities, became involved in the Chinese resistance and rescued over 100 children from the invading Japanese army.
Written for 9-14 year olds.

Gladys Aylward a woman on a mission.
This amazing true story of a young woman who left her home, parents and family in England and embarked on an unknown journey to China.
In love with it’s people from a young age she felt God calling her to this war torn land to teach it’s people about Jesus, His Life, His Love for a fallen world. Right from the beginning was not smooth sailing. Even the train ride getting there was full of obstacles and at times frightening. Going into war torn countries on her way.
This amazing young woman , tiny in stature, ministered to her Chinese families. Providing shelter, food and what medical hep she could.
Becoming an “officer of feet” Gladys walked mostly to villages telling families that little girls feet were no longer to be bandaged up as this was causing health issues with girls feet. It was an opportunity for Gladys to both do the Lords work and earn some much needed funds to look after the many orphans sent her way. Eventually Japan invaded China, even out into the remote villages.
There was at the time free China on the other side of the Yellow River.
Her epic journey started when, to escape the cruel Japanese, she walked 100 children over the mountains to the banks of the river and subsequent crossing.
She actually became very ill. Even so she went on ministering in her beloved China. Though not a clever student, Gladys learned to read, speak and write Chinese. She began speaking in England with proceeds going to funding Chinese orphanages.
I loved the tenacity of Miss Gladys Aylward. Her faithfulness to God and enduring love and strength as well as the love for the children whom she held very dear and all she gave for them to be safe.
An inspirational and beautiful book.

Inspiring love
I am blown away by Gladys’ selfless love of the Chinese people and her steadfast commitment to serving God in every waking moment.
Her story shows us what is possible when we chose to walk in step with Jesus and keep our feet on His path, despite the distractions and difficult circumstances surrounding us.
What an inspirational lady. I feel humbled to learn of her.
Ann Richardson has narrated this story beautifully and sensitively.
