About this listen
As featured on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 5 LiveSelected as one of the Independent’s 10 best pregnancy books for expectant parents
Birth is a feminist issue. It’s the feminist issue nobody’s talking about.
For too long women have been told, ‘a healthy baby is all that matters’. This book dares to say women matter too.
Finally blasting the feminist spotlight into the labour ward, Milli Hill encourages women everywhere to stand and deliver, insisting that birth is no longer left off the list in discussions about female power, control and agency.
From the importance of birth plans to your human rights in childbirth, and including birth stories from women across the world, this call-to-arms will help you find your voice, take an active role in your choices, and change the way you think about childbirth.

‘A much-needed, brilliant, reassuring, pioneering, kick-ass book that all women – especially mothers – should read!’ Emma Jane Unsworth
‘Milli Hill is one of our very favourite birth writers. Birth has been overlooked by feminists for too long, in spite of the injustices happening in the labour ward. This book is a rallying cry for women everywhere to take charge of their births and recognise their own autonomy at this pivotal moment in their lives. Everyone should read it and look at the experience of childbirth through a feminist lens.’ Ricki Lake, Producer and Abby Epstein, Director: The Business of Being Born
‘Whether a person is considering giving birth or not, Milli Hill's exploration of childbirth as a central feminist issue is a must-read. I loved this book!’ Soraya Chemaly
‘Everyone should read this awesome book! The world has changed and Milli Hill connects the dots in a way that can change minds and improve outcomes.’ Tina Cassidy
‘Finally. Someone brave enough to say the words “feminist” and “birth” in the same sentence in a book that is not an academic polemic.’ Hannah Dahlen

A must read for all birthing people & their crew.
Whoa, what an eye opening book.
It provided my partner and myself with hours of constructive discussions. Not only dose it outline the ways in which someone can be or feel let down by the current birthing system but it gifts you with the most valuable tools to help combat aspects that may not suit your needs, wants and desires. I deeply appreciated hearing that my concerns were valid and how to address them within the system so I may have the outcome and experience i desire most.
THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS MILLI FOR PENNING THIS INVALUABLE RESOURCE.

Fantastic
This book will change the way you think about pregnancy, birth, and women’s bodies. It is feminism without being “radical in-your-face you must do X or it means you hate women” feminism. A must read for ANY expectant parent, regardless of the type of birth you want to have. Lots of facts backed up with evidence to reinforce birth choices and human rights during pregnancy and birth.

the book that everyone needs to listen to
this book starts off slowly but every chapter gets better and better it's not about saying you need a certain birth but a positive birth and what the hospital system needs to stop doing

Essential listening for ALL birthing people
I absolutely loved this book. It doesn't demonize or pit any specific kind of birth against another, so no birthing person will experience it's content as 'shaming'. Its emphasis is on everything you should know about your choices, your healthcare and your RIGHTS as a human. I wish it had been written before my 1st birth, but I've just read it in time for my 2nd and it has opened my eyes and empowered me on so many levels. I want this for every birthing person; please download it! It's invaluable.

A truly life changing mindshift
Thank you Millie, I have never enjoyed a book so much - found myself nodding, shaking my head, crying and laughing the whole way through. My husband is surely sick of me sharing quotes and stories from the book; I just had to share everything I was learning.
Every one of my pregnant friends and family will be receiving this book and I hope that this small addition to their lives, make big changes to their birth outcomes and views of themselves as powerful women xx

A must read for everyone
This is an excellent book, beautifully read by the author. Hill points out that birth is the land feminism forgot. Not enough of us are noticing that women are getting a raw deal in the maternity system, she says, and we should not tolerate this state of affairs. The book catalogues stories of egregious human rights abuses in the birth room, from the video of Kimberly Turbin's forced episiotomy , to mothers separated unnecessarily in the NICU from their babies, to mothers labelled mentally unstable for expressing a view that differs from their health care provider. It outlines the evidence of the uneven distribution of interventions that women experience, evidence that strongly suggests that rights are being abused. When women want or need interventions, they also suffer from unkind care, and a lack of respect for their choices and their dignity. Perhaps the most important message in this book is that women matter too, no matter what kind of birth they plan, or if their births don't go to plan. While women cannot control birth, they certainly can and should have an say in it. They can make way for a different type of maternity system: a feminist one.
