About this listen
Living at the limits of our ordinary perception, mosses are a common but largely unnoticed element of the natural world. Gathering Moss is a beautifully written mix of science and personal reflection that invites listeners to explore and learn from the elegantly simple lives of mosses.
Robin Wall Kimmerer's audiobook is not an identification guide, nor is it a scientific treatise. Rather, it is a series of linked personal essays that will lead general listeners and scientists alike to an understanding of how mosses live and how their lives are intertwined with the lives of countless other beings, from salmon and hummingbirds to redwoods and rednecks. Kimmerer clearly and artfully explains the biology of mosses, while at the same time reflecting on what these fascinating organisms have to teach us.
Drawing on her diverse experiences as a scientist, mother, teacher, and writer of Native American heritage, Kimmerer explains the stories of mosses in scientific terms as well as in the framework of indigenous ways of knowing. In her audiobook, the natural history and cultural relationships of mosses become a powerful metaphor for ways of living in the world.

an offering
the words "an offering" get thrown around in the 2020's any time someone wants to sell you something without saying they want to sell you something. in complete opposition to that is Robin's first book. whether she asks little of the reader or a lot of the reader rests on how they currently live amongst the natural world, in opposotion, or in awe, or something in between. for me we are on a similar wave length, and so the length of the book was justs a wave of information I agreed on but hadn't learnt yet. I am forever grateful

Gorgeous book!
You know a book is written well on a topic when you become an instant fan of the subject matter. Now watch me annoy the hell out of my friends with my latest niche interest ✨mosses✨
I stumbled across this book because I have a huge passion for mycology and now I can genuinely add mosses to that list too thanks to Robin.
Part philosophy book, part natural history book, Gathering Moss was such a beautiful read. The book is beautifully narrated by Robin herself and I just love hearing books read by the author. Such a pleasure to listen to while on my daily walks in nature with my dog.

mislead but happily lost
I was expecting a rather dry non-fiction with statistics and cold anthropological focused book. I was expecting a historical recount of moss throughout many cultures and eras. what I got was a wonderful series of personal essays pertaining to mosses, but not really. They were philosophical in nature and I am glad to have heard it in the authors voice for I'm not sure I would have stuck with it long enough to hear the wealth of indigenous wisdom. Now I see mosses in a completely new light. *I* am grateful to the mosses.
