d. 20 marts i 1995 fandt det værste terrorangreb siden 2. verdenskrig sted i Tokyos undergrundbane. Det viste sig senere, at det var sektens Aum Shinrikyo, der stod bag angrebet. Sekten var ledet af den blinde og selverklærede frelserskikelse Shoko Asahara. 12 mennesker mistede livet og sårede flere tusinde mennesker. Angrebet fik store konsekvenser for det ellers meget liberale og religionsfrie Japan.
