About this listen
Many would find much to fear in Fyneshade's dark and crumbling corridors, its unseen master and silent servants. But not I. For they have far more to fear from me...
On the day of her grandmother's funeral, Marta discovers that she is to be sent to be governess at Fyneshade, her charge the young daughter of the owner, Sir William Pritchard.
All is not well at Fyneshade. Sir William is mysteriously absent, and his son and heir Vaughan is forbidden to enter the house. Marta finds herself drawn to him, despite the warnings of the housekeeper that Vaughan is a danger to all around him. But Marta is no innocent to be preyed upon. Guided by the dark gift taught to her by her grandmother, she has made her own plans. It will take more than a family riven by murderous secrets to stop her...
“A deliciously dark and decadent novel, sure to bewitch readers everywhere.”—Emilia Hart, author of WEYWARD
“A gloriously gothic and often darkly funny story. I devoured it whole.”—Anna Mazzola, author of THE CLOCKWORK GIRL

In the Gothic Tradition
Note: I"m a bit stingy with my stars - to me 5 is a masterpiece; 3 is good, enjoyable, interesting.
Review:There’s a reason it begins with a quote from The Turn of the Screw. However, the protagonist is no shrinking violet, which is satisfying and intriguing. In the Gothic tradition, it takes its time - the plot unravels like the shadows in hidden corridors. It did make me aware that our modern sensibilities have given us a taste for fast plotting, intricate puzzles and red herrings. That is not the style here: it’s an atmospheric, slow emerging with most of the juicy stuff towards the end.
This was a well received and well-reviewed novel. If you like this genre, you’ll likely be very satisfied with this.
