About this listen

Kirk Varnedoe on this archive edition of Fresh Air. Ed Harris is starring as Jackson Pollack in a new movie about the artist's life. We'll feature an interview from our archives about Pollock. Varnedoe was the chief curator for a major Jackson Pollock exhibit that ran last year at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Pollock is widely considered the most challenging and influential American painter of the twentieth century and one of the primary creators in modern art since 1945. Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming in 1912. Varnedoe wrote the accompanying book Jackson Pollock. Also, we remember actor Werner Klemperer, who played Colonel Klink on the TV show Hogan's Heroes. He died on December 7 at the age of 80. Klemperer was the son of the conductor Otto Klemperer. He started his career in theater, and moved on to Hollywood. He won two Emmys during his 6-year stint as Klink (he was nominated all six years). In 1987, he returned to Broadway to play a Jewish shopkeeper in a revival of Cabaret. His work earned him a Tony nomination. (Broadcast Date: December 15, 2000)(P) and ©2000 WHYY-FM Biographies & Memoirs
