Vivió en Valladolid. En 1600 es bachiller y escribe sus primeras obras. Comienza su polémica con Góngora y una vida de contrastes: de los escritos satíricos de El buscón a su neoestoicismo, en 1613 se marcha a Italia al servicio del duque de Osuna. Obtiene en 1617 el hábito de Santiago. Vuelto a la península en 1620, corrige y publica obras que chocarán con ediciones piratas. Escribe La política de Dios, e imprime El buscón (1626).

Entabla una relación inestable con el conde duque de Olivares, al que dedica su edición de Fray Luis de León. El 7 de diciembre de 1639 es detenido en Madrid y encerrado en San Marcos de León, sin aclarar el motivo. Se insinúa que fuera confidente de los franceses. En libertad en 1643 ordenó sus obras, retirado, desde 1644, en La Torre. Murió en Villanueva de los Infantes.
