About this listen

Charged with drama and beauty, this memorable collection by a master storyteller weaves a magical world of possibility and power from female myths of physical renewal, creation and change. It is an extraordinary immersion into the bodies and voices, mindscapes and landscapes, of the shapeshifting women of our native folklore.

Drawing on myth and fairy tales found across Europe from Croatia to Sweden, Ireland to Russia, Sharon Blackie brings to life women's remarkable ability to transform themselves in the face of seemingly impossible circumstances. These stories are about coming to terms with our animal natures, exploring the ways in which we might renegotiate our fractured relationship with the natural world and uncovering the wildness and wilderness within.

Captivating Fairytale Retellings but so much more!

I absolutely loved this book of short stories by Blackie. They are marvellous, lyrical retellings of old myths and fairytales with clever twists and sudden turns and always shot through with deep abiding wisdom and this quiet, yet feral keening that calls us back to our wild woman selves. Truly captivating.

These stories are perfect for a quiet Autumn afternoon or a long Winter's night. If you are lucky enough to listen to the audio version, you will have the added delight of hearing the many accented voices of the tales - Scottish, Irish, Welsh, English - all female, all fierce and passionate story-tellers - and that is a joy too.

Can't recommend this book highly enough.

Beautifully crafted contemporary retelling of folklore from a female lens, shades of Pinkola Estes

I've enjoyed listening to this creative reinterpretation of these stories. Sharon Blackie is a gifted storyteller who interprets myth and folklore, artfully capturing her heroine's perspectives in first, second and first person narrative. Beautiful writing, descriptive and soulful. The selection of narrators were all brilliant, possibly some of the best I've heard on Audible.
My least favourite was Meeting Baba Yaga - while humourous, as a contemporary story it was a bit too far removed from the other stories, and the protagonist wasn't very likeable. Kudos to the narrator for this one though - her ability to do accents and voices was a standout.

Weaving old tales into new

I liked it all. The old, the new, the telling. Thankyou Sharon and your excellent narrators.

Completely different from her Sharon’s other works

I loved Sharon Blackie’s first two audible books and was so excited to start my third. I just couldn’t take to it at all. I persisted until the end to no avail.
