WINNER OF THE HUGO AWARD FOR BEST ALL-TIME SERIES

The Foundation series is Isaac Asimov’s iconic masterpiece. Unfolding against the backdrop of a crumbling Galactic Empire, the story of Hari Seldon’s two Foundations is a lasting testament to an extraordinary imagination, one that shaped science fiction as we know it today.

After a long war which saw the First Foundation emerge victorious, the Second Foundation is now believed to be extinct, and all records of planet Earth’s existence have been erased.

No one suspects that the Second Foundation could still exist. None, except Council member Golan Trevize, who finds himself ordered to leave Terminus, accompanied by historian Janov Pelorat, in order to find it.

Yet this quest will lead an unsuspecting Golan further than he could have possibly imagined – closer than ever to Earth, where the fate of the whole galaxy awaits him.

Such a good book

I haven't read these books for years. After recently listening to the trilogy, I was happy with it, but it had some age to it. This book was brilliant. Stands up well and it's just really good.

A good development and extension of the series

I've been happy to revisit the ‘Foundation’ saga again after about 30 years. I read them as a late-teen, and I am a very big fan of Asimov to this day. The audiobook performance on all these titles is excellent with the narrator providing a good array of different voices for all the characters.
This story has many of the same concerns that started to pop up in ‘Second Foundation’ with the First Foundation’s worries about their free will being dominated by the mysterious mental powered Second Foundation. It then further complicates things by bringing in another actor who may be influencing and controlling both from afar, yet the Foundations themselves are heading towards fascism (especially the first). The themes of individualism, collectivism, fascism, and the nature of free will vs pre-determination (competitive ideas from the Cold War milieu) are thus pertinent and highly present in this volume of the tale. I really liked that the tensions are very high throughout the story. Asimov keeps you interested enough to continue following along until we find some sort of cadence/resolution which may not be to everyone's liking. Thankfully, the protagonist himself goes on to question this in the very next volume ‘Foundation and Earth' so we get more story to follow. This is great Sci-Fi from one of the giants of the form.
