About this listen

Superstar footballer Luca Bruni is being blackmailed for a night of lust he swears he didn't participate in...except the ransom photo denies that. A media darling on and off the field, he has powerful charisma, a perfect home life he'll do anything to protect, and more money than he knows what to do with. He's determined to defy the extortion racket.

When Detective Superintendent Jack Hawksworth learns that the cunning mastermind behind this crime has already swindled a dozen of the world's most highly prized male athletes, he is instructed to keep the situation from escalating and prevent a media frenzy.

Intrigued by the creativity of the crime and the shockwaves it is creating through the global sporting fraternity, Jack begins a journey into a case that has tentacles far more wide-reaching that he ever imagined - and far more deadly.

An explosive blockbuster from an internationally bestselling author.

Thoroughly enjoyed this listen!!

Well written, great narrator and a bunch of great characters!! Love the story, the twists and turn. English Premier League Football is not something I have read about before but very interesting take. Story takes me back to my favourite city London. I couldn’t stop listening once I started the book. Just one chapter in and I was hooked! 5 star all the way.

JACK HAWKSWORTH AT HIS BEST

A refreshing new backdrop for this latest Jack Hawksworth thriller. I loved it and can't wait for his next adventure. While I have loved all in this series, I did feel that Dead Tide was not as good as the first 3, but I'm delighted to say that this one is back on track with a really engaging storyline and characters.
Fiona McIntosh has such wonderful storytelling capability - whether it be murder or historical fiction, with fascinating history built into her books. I think I've read them all and eagerly anticipate the next.

Full-on chick lit

i have liked this series up until now - although the chick lit elements were aways a bit grating (women swooning over impossibly gorgeous superintendent; female officers classified by how good looking or otherwise they were). This one seems to have flipped even more into the romance genre, Beautiful inspector Kate, desperate for the love of superintendent Jack, invites him to her birthday party which (despite her being a serious career detective) is full of man-obsessed friends called things like Bella Ferrari, vamping around and falling over Jack. When Kate vaguely apologises for a friend who won't leave him alone (as you might to your boss) he accuses her of sounding "catty" and later reassures her he's not a "cad" (does anyone still talk like that that outside of chick lit?).

i think if you like romance with crime thrown in, this will hit the mark -- but if you're a crime fan, not big on romance cliches, it is sometimes hard to take. The other clunky element is the football dialogue. Anyone with any knowledge of the premier league or how people talk about football may not be convinced by Huxley "up for the quadruple" -- despite chunks of monologue that sound like they are regurgitated from an adviser.

BUT -- the blackmail plot story is itself very good and unfolds at an exciting pace. Enjoyable but with cringes.
