'Fortællinger fra Labrador' var Aksel Sandemoses debut. Aksel Sandemose (1899-1965) var en dansk-norsk forfatter og essayist. Mest kendt er han for sin roman 'En flygtning krydser sit spor' (1933), hvori han introducerede Janteloven, som det småborgerlige provinssamfunds uskrevne regler om indordnende opførsel. rnI et hovedværk af Sandemose udtaler en af karakterne, at "Det eneste, der er værd at skrive om, er mord og kærlighed." og netop undersøgelsen af menneskets drifter og irrationelle skyggesider, er da også ofte central i Sandemoses eget forfatterskab, der har især jalousidrama og mord som tilbagevendende motiver.
