Den kvindelige hjemmesygeplejeske blev afhørt telefonisk en time efter branden, og hun oplyste til politiet, at hverken hun eller chaufføren var rygere, og at de således ikke havde røget i lejligheden. Hun oplyste videre, at lejlighedens beboer havde været vågen og befandt sig i lejlighedens stue under det natlige tilsyn. Beboeren havde været ked af det og givet udtryk for livslede.
Det umiddelbare indtryk var, at der her var tale om en dement kvinde, der havde glemt et tændt stearinlys i sin stue, og at det var dette stearinlys, der havde forårsaget branden. Det skulle dog i de følgende dage og måneder vise sig, at der var tale om en langt mere kompliceret sag.
