About this listen
Forged in Fire takes us inside the secretive world of the Australian commandos.
Garry made a report on the radio: 'I see around 200 women and children heading north up the valley.' Less than 400 metres below us, a steady stream of women and kids were hurrying away in single file.
'Where are all the men?' I asked Garry. 'Waiting for us,' he responded, with a look of concern I had not seen on his face before. My heart skipped a beat—we were on.
From the age of 12, Scott Ryder knew he wanted to join the army, and he signed up as soon as he could. After serving as a paratrooper and in East Timor with 3 RAR, he wanted more. He trained all summer and took the grueling selection course for the commandos, earning the prized green beret on his second attempt.
Forged in Fire takes us inside the secretive world of the commandos. Ryder shares battlefield stories from his tours to Afghanistan, where his regiment saw some of the heaviest fighting Australian forces have experienced since the Vietnam War. After being seriously injured in a shocking Black Hawk helicopter crash in Kandahar, he was the only survivor to return to active service.
Frankly written, with self-deprecating humor, it reveals the qualities of strength and mental resilience that characterise special forces operators.
'Scott is not famous; his chest is not bedecked with the grandest tin and ribbon. His voice is from among us rather than up on high. And his account of the DNA of the commando, the lesser sung super-soldier, is all the better for it.' - from the foreword by Chris Masters, author of Flawed Hero

Interesting behind the curtain look at the ADF
Didn't mind the story and content. Shame the rivalries and focus on rank rather than skill and leadership is still rife in the ADF.

Unbelievable story of courage
Loved every moment. wished Scott would narrate parts of this story himself so we could really grasp his emotions. Other then that this story is perfect listen for anyone

excellent work from an excellent group of blokes
one of the reasons I joined was to hopefully have stories to tell my grandchildren half as good as these. minus the massive injuries

A real commando story
I have been waiting for this book to drop for a while now and it was well worth the wait. A very good insight to commando regiment and what they accomplished. A very authentic book. Well done Scott! Thank you for your service

a standout soldiers memoir
very well written and full of self deprecating humor as is the Australian way. I've red countless war memoirs, and this would be in my top five

Outstanding listen
We'll, the dude narrating is a familiar voice. Good choice; does a great job.
The story is spot on. It is a soldier's story; a Special Ops soldier's story. Yes, there's plenty of cool special ops stuff in the book to make it intriguing and breath takingly interesting, but it's also down to Earth and intriguing from a different point of view.
I love books of soldier tales, particularly of diggers, and this one is probably my favourite.

Real, raw and captivating
I have listened to and read pretty much every Australian Special forces book available and can confidently say this is my favourite.
Personally relating to the author in some aspects of his story, personality and life experiences had me hanging on every word.
10/10 solid listening.
