About this listen

The first book in C.J.Cherryh's eponymous series, Foreigner begins an epic tale of the survivors of a lost spacecraft who crash-land on a planet inhabited by a hostile, sentient alien race. From its beginnings as a human-alien story of first contact, the Foreigner series has become a true science fiction odyssey, following a civilization from the age of steam through early space flight to confrontations with other alien species in distant sectors of space. It is the masterwork of a truly remarkable author.

Alien first contact story, with a difference

Bren Cameron is a human whose job is to act as a translator and diplomat to the court of the Aishidi'tat. This job turns out to be more hazardous than you would expect. Trying to keep up with current events in an alien culture when you aren't always sure of the language isn't easy!

This is a really immersive experience. The author writes in a tight third person perspective, so we only know what our lead character Bren knows - and that is often not enough for his own comfort. There are lots of red herrings and things that could be important but aren't - or much more dangerously - things that seem unimportant but aren't.

If, like me, you don't have a good memory and are listening on audiobook (without the benefit of a glossary), you may need a little help. I found the fan website really helpful, just google Fandom Shejidan Wiki for glossaries, maps etc

Very political, but I love it

I have always loved this series, and am glad to find it in audiobook format. I tend to think of Bren as being a scholar of languages (or language) and an academic, who more a professor than an action hero

CJC is always a winner. A thinking persons star wars

Loved the story when first released still loved now.

One of the great Sci Fi stories not bogged down in lasers and magic abilities. But still a great story in stars so far from our own
