About this listen
NASA discovered the alien ship lurking in the asteroid belt in the 1960's. They kept the Target under intense surveillance for decades, letting the public believe they were exploring the solar system, while they worked feverishly to refine the technology needed to reach it.
The ship itself remained silent, drifting.
Dr. Jane Holloway is content documenting nearly-extinct languages and had never contemplated becoming an astronaut. But when NASA recruits her to join a team of military scientists for an expedition to the Target, it's an adventure she can't refuse.
The ship isn't vacant, as they presumed.
A disembodied voice rumbles inside Jane's head, "You are home".
Jane fights the growing doubts of her colleagues as she attempts to decipher what the alien wants from her. As the derelict ship devolves into chaos and the crew gets cut off from their escape route, Jane must decide if she can trust the alien's help to survive.

SPACE TRAVEL
A really interesting and compelling trilogy about telepathic alien squids, intrepid deep space travel and first encounters with alien cultures. I very much enjoyed the pacing and the sci-fi elements of Wells' work. She clearly has researched and thought out all of the concepts (from culture to society and science) she introduces. I also like the idea of humans being the legendary and mythic race in galactic history.
Unfortunately, it does suffer from an obligatory romantic sub plot that frankly drags down and distracts from the interesting stuff. The main romantic interest is written like a jerk who calculates every move to get into bed with the protagonist, and sulking when he doesn't get his way. Also I got tired of the protagonist throwing 'tremulous smiles' at him. Disappointing, as her relationship with the alien squid is far more nuanced, proving that Wells can write complex relationships. Just apparently not between humans.
