About this listen

Floodtide is a character-driven, merciless rush of blood from the pen of Judy Nunn, one of Australia's master storytellers. It is a brilliant observation of turbulent times in the mighty 'Iron Ore State' - Western Australia. The novel traces the fortunes of four men and four families over four memorable decades: The prosperous post-war 1950s, when childhood is idyllic and carefree in the small, peaceful city of Perth; the turbulent '60s, when youth is caught up in the conflict of the Vietnam War and free love reigns; the avaricious '70s, when Western Australia's mineral boom sees the rise of a new young breed of aggressive entrepreneurs; and the corrupt '80s, and the birth of "WA Inc", when the alliance of greedy politicians and powerful businessmen brings the state to its knees, even threatening the downfall of the federal government.

Each of the four who travel this journey has a story to tell. An environmentalist fights to save the primitive and beautiful Pilbara coast from the careless ravaging of mining conglomerates; a Vietnam War veteran rises above crippling injuries to discover a talent that gains him an international reputation; and an ambitious geologist joins forces with a hard-core businessman to lead the way in the growth of Perth from a sleepy town to a glittering citadel. But, as the 90s ushers in a new age when innocence is lost, all four are caught up in the irreversible tides of change, and actions must be answered for.

Well researched and an entertaining story

The story was entertaining and well researched. Being born and raised in Western Australia it was a trip down memory lane of the 1960s onwards and particularly the WA inc days with Brian Burke and Laurie Connell.

The narration was appalling. This let the book down. It should be recommended to all those wishing to narrate that they learn to annunciate words and pronounce the names of landmarks and towns correctly. For example Cockburn sound in WA is not pronounced cock burn, but rather Coburn. The mispronunciation throughout the narration only served to irritate rather than entertain.

I felt this story was fairly ordinary

I have love Judy Nunn books so far, but I must say Floodtide was a bit disappointing. I found it very ordinary and lacked much excitement, until the 2nd last chapter, then it was finished.

More research please

Interesting story and reasonable narration except for the total BUTCHERING of the pronunciation of WA names - Mandurah, Cockburn etc, etc. Just a little research would have fixed these cringeworthy mistakes.

a good story

Set in Western Australia this is an entertaining story. It had interesting recent events interwoven into the story line such as Australia in the Americas Cup Yachting race.
Overall I enjoyed it.

Pronunciation

Apart from the mispronunciation of ‘canapés’ and Cockburn, the story was twice as long as it needed to be and got very sappy in parts. Great descriptions of WA though.

one of my favourites

one of my all time favourites.
as a lover of the ocean, the Pilbara and as a loud W.A bloke who grew up in the shadow of W.A Inc. I must say that this book always brings me to tears at times and makes me laugh out loud at others.
A brilliant novel by Brilliant novelist.

I tried but couldn’t get into this book

I’m not sure if it was the story or narrator that I didn’t like much. Or both. Being from Perth I really wanted to like it, the mispronunciations were very annoying too.
