About this listen

The second original novel from the much-missed Space Western Firefly, produced with Joss Whedon as consulting editor, set between the TV series and the movie Serenity

A cosmic cry for help

Captain Mal Reynolds is in a fix. He’d like nothing more than to find honest smuggling work that stays under the Alliance’s radar and keeps the good ship Serenity in the sky. But when an old flame of Jayne Cobb’s sends a desperate plea across the galaxy, his crew has other ideas.

A cutthroat bandit

On the arid, far-flung world of Thetis, the terrifying Elias Vandal is threatening to overrun the town of Coogan’s Bluff with his trigger-happy army. He wants control of the only thing standing between its people and dustbowl ruin: their water supply.

The magnificent nine

When the crew land at the hardscrabble desert outpost, they discover two things: a savage outlaw gang who will stop at nothing to get what they want, and that Jayne’s former girlfriend, Temperance, is single-handedly raising a teenage daughter, born less than a year after she and Jayne parted ways. A daughter by the name of Jane McCloud....

It's like they were there.

I loved that the narrator has a real feel for the characters. There were times when it felt like Malcolm Reynolds was there, reading his lines. Extremely well written with a perfect grasp of each of the characters.

Great story telling!

Love the movie and tv series so was curious about the audio books. I haven’t been disappointed. It’s well read with a good understanding of the lingo in this dystopian futuristic space story. I love the clever incorporation of Chinese swearing and the mix of space cowboy, frontiersman on a canvas of empire versus resistance story. The characters grow as you listen to each story so they’re more than the quirky quippy fast paced talk, there are fabulous background stories and a character that adds sparkles of future story. Might help to read the first book then the CC subsequent ones.

Awesome Firefly Saga - Mature Content Warning

This book was a great read. Thrilling, with action. Serious, with character development. Amusing, with lingo and comical scenes. A classic Firefly adventure against insurmountable odds, sarcasm and cahones. These books are a great series so far. Definitely wanting to give a content warning though...

This book took me a good year to get through due to the mature and graphic content that you just didn't see in the Firefly show. It's usually very overtly and slightly hinted at in those old episodes, (like when you can easily imagine what the Reavers did to people without seeing it all on screen,) wheras in these books violence and SA are bluntly and flatout talked about. If you have any forms of mental illness, PTSD, softness to graphic violence and sexual violence, I strongly advise you to take this book at a slower pace, like I did.

The book does an amazing job at introducing a shocking and cruel villain that leads a group of awful, scared into obedience, yet also somewhat willingly vicious/murderous/SA driven fiends.
I love that Firefly is such a unique piece of fiction, somehow still being relevant with its intended and unintended/unforseen parallels to modern society, conflict/war, righteousness/morals, differeng POVs and opinions.

The pace and performance by the reader is solid. Understandable, enjoyable and clear.
The book itself is well spaced out.
This book is an excellent action adventure, a fantastic read, and I am excited for the next book.

9/10 recommend.

An interesting story about a much loved character. The ending though was not unexpected overall.

Enjoyable for fans

I enjoyed the story and the performance, easily following along with the characters we've grown to know through the series. River was a little less mysterious perhaps but she fit in well and I was happy to accept the variation from my memory of her.
