The Fens are burning, and Detective Nikki Galena faces a cat-and-mouse battle with a killer arsonist. Someone is lighting fires. First they target homes and businesses, but then a body is found at one of the crime scenes. More fires are lit. And at each one a single person dies. But the victims have led spotless lives, and apparently there's no connection between them.
Meanwhile, the town is facing a very peculiar threat from a group of sinister Satanists led by a charismatic businessman. Who is burning with anger, and can Nikki stop them before anyone else dies?

Burning revenge
This story is all about revenge being a dish best served cold. The perpetrator coldly plans the fires to seek revenge for a crime that he didn’t have the full facts for. His father’s lies and deception have lead to this young man’s mental instability. There are ‘suggestions’ from the higher ups that this case is too sensitive to continue investing. Fortunately for the victims and their families, Nikki, Joseph and the crew do some unofficial work until their evidence is overwhelming enough that they are given the go ahead to continue.
It wasn’t until the climax had almost arrived that I worked out a connection between the two main stories. I love the interactions amongst the characters and the feeling of being invested in their lives as a reader. I sincerely hope there is more to come in this series.

A fiery feud
I really enjoy these detective Nikki Galena stories and I definitely should make an effort to read them in order. This one involves a tragic revenge plot involving fire and it culminates in a conflagration of lies and deceit. Brilliant writing ensures there is never a dull moment and the quirky characters give an effective distraction from the somber subject. This detective series just gets better and better.

She's done it again!
i admit I also downloaded the Audible narration and listened over 50% but the addion of the accents only accentuates the Author's brilliant painting of the Fens. I don't believe there are really so many murders on the Fens but you will fall in love with her characters and be engrossed by the mystery.

Brilliant as always
I really love this series and especially Howe over the books. All the characters are starting to really come to life when you getting to know them it’s really great. Can’t wait to listen to the next one. I highly recommend this series

Great series
The stories are well written, the descriptions. I like the way the characters are rounding out from the first book. Will carry on to the next book. I also like the narrator I recognise which character she is doing. Well written and enjoyable. Each story, so far, is different.

Serial series reader
Enjoyed female narrator.
Complex throughly riveting story. Of course not mundane , all the unfolding characters, twists & turns of the plot require your utmost concentration ( especially since audiobook & your can’t easily flip & scan back pages. Another excellent book. On my third complete ‘reading’ of this series & it still intrigues me.
