Mmmm ready for things to speed up a bit
I’m up to chapter 15 and I’m finding I can’t always listen coz I’m getting frustrated by the very very gradual growth in confidence of the FMC. There’s a bit too much inner monologue compared to what’s actually verbalised and the action. The FMC’s thoughts are a bit repetitive, the points belaboured. It can get a bit frustrating … excruciating at times. I still respect that it is a realistic depiction of the growth of confidence and the development of a spine, which really isn’t a fast or easy process - especially when one isn’t explicitly getting help to understand the processes of creating change. That being said, there are plenty of moments where she says she wants to be strong and assertive, then lives an instance of it with nearly excruciating fear and timidity, then reverts back to weakness and self doubt.
I’m kinda not loving the continuing shyness, blushing and timidity in the face of males that she’s clearly attracted to. Though, I do appreciate how realistic it is given she is opening up to the possibility of have safe sexual interactions and relationships.
The female narrator has a very cutesy voice which amplifies the depiction of naivety and makes the internal and external whinging, resistance and constant self doubt more evident. I can’t help but feel there could be a little more variety in her tonality.
I’ve listened to lots of books with the male narrator Aaron Shedlock. I have noticed that he doesn’t distinguish between male characters too much but I really like his voice and the lack of variation doesn’t … detract from the story or cause me any frustration or disappointment.
At this stage I’ll probably keep listening but know I’ll stop when I feel the frustration of the FMC’s lack of confidence and the excessive and repetitive self doubt and come back to it when I’m in a more patient state. I really do want to know what happens.
