About this listen

Across seven tales, Haruki Murakami brings his powers of observation to bear on the lives of men who, in their own ways, find themselves alone. Here are vanishing cats and smoky bars, lonely hearts and mysterious women, baseball and the Beatles, woven together to tell stories that speak to us all.

Marked by the same wry humor that has defined his entire body of work, in this collection Murakami has crafted another contemporary classic.

Critic Reviews

"Such is the exquisite, gossamer construction of Murakami's writing that everything he chooses to describe trembles with symbolic possibility." ( Guardian on Norwegian Wood)
"Brilliantly combines elements of the surreal, film noir and existentialist enquiry." ( Sunday Times on Dance, Dance, Dance)

A peek into another world

Murakami’s short stories are laden with experiences & emotions you don’t usually get in such a format. This series is perfect for anyone just starting out with audiobooks. It didn’t hurt that Obama had it in his 2019 must-read list.

Every story is quirky, and I wanted each to go on

This is a great collection of short stories. They held my attention and usually ended at what seemed like the end of a chapter, with a conclusion to come several chapters later. The narrator did a good job, and I didn't find it confusing that he wasn't Japanese. The culture of the characters came still came through. I will definitely seek out more works by this author.

Murakami magic

These are great stories, great performance. I admit to an agenda as I am a superfan. Please don't say he's a misogynist. He'll tell you men without woman have a hole in their heart.

Very Murakami in tone

These are great gentle moments of Murakami, and perfectly capture one of the elements that I enjoy most in his writing, namely the simple matter of fact feelings that compose much of being a man away from the corrosive effects of machismo

Could've been better

Writing was typical enjoyable Murakami but a collection of short stories could've been tied together more tightly to make up one story would've been much preferred. From halfway onwards it struggled to keep my attention.

Beautiful, sensual writing

Particularly the title story, the last… evocative and deeply resonant. His repetitious style is a true art.

The accents ruin it

I know it’s not Japanese but it should not be cockney it loses its majesty

A thought provoking series of stories

I was very captivated by the first few stories. They all either teach of guide us in a way, but you have to read between the lines to see the message. You take what you need from this book as I did...

The title novel is definitely five star, the other novels were just OK .

Very easy to listen to

‘Drive my car’ stands out but the other stories are a pleasant listen that provoke thought. The vocal performance is well suited and does the stories justice for an English audience.
