Jack Twist and Ennis del Mar live hard and lonely lives as ranch hands in the wild, unforgiving landscape of Wyoming. They are 'country boys with no prospects, brought up to hard work and privation, both rough-mannered and tough-spoken', glad to have found one another's company where none had been expected. But suddenly companionship becomes something else on Brokeback Mountain: something not looked for, something deadly …

Critic Reviews

"A timeless story that stands up to repeated listening and will stay with listeners long after they've finished the hour-long [audio]." ( AudioFile)
"Proulx's understanding is at its most remarkable in the astonishing Brokeback Mountain. [She] knows what she could only know...by the infrared that allows a very few writers clear sight in the dark of the imagination." ( New York Times Book Review)

A terrible, relentless love story

At the mercy of their place in America, and their place in history, two characters we learn to feel deep attachment for eke out difficult lives, hiding a brilliant and consuming love for each other.
The best love story I have ever read.

Amazing story

Amazing story. I read it after I watched the movie, and was pleased to see that the movie follows the book closely. Harrowing in its own way, it tells the story of two lovers in a time their love was abhorred, and the dynamic of each as they face it in their own way. This was a story that has stuck with me long after I finished.

Hauntingly beautiful tragic

I read this book after I saw the movie. The movie follows the book closely. Such a sad and tormented story of same sex love in the 1960s and beyond between these two men. So beautifully written by Proulx and narrated by Scott with sensitivity. Society mainly has come along way since the harrowing existence of Ennis and Jack. A somber yet beautiful read/listen.
