• A searing historical novel set in 1950s Washington, D.C.—a world of dominated by personalities like Nixon, Lyndon Johnson, and Joe McCarthy—and infused with political drama, unexpected humor, and heartbreak.
• From the acclaimed author of Watergate and Up With the Sun
In a world of bare-knuckled ideology and secret dossiers, Timothy Laughlin, a recent college graduate and devout Catholic, is eager to join the crusade against Communism. An encounter with a handsome State Department official, Hawkins Fuller, leads to Tim's first job and, after Fuller's advances, his first love affair. As McCarthy mounts a desperate bid for power and internal investigations focus on “sexual subversives” in the government, Tim and Fuller find it ever more dangerous to navigate their double lives while moving between the diplomatic world of Foggy Bottom and NATO's front line in Europe.

Devastatingly good
What can I say? I think I will be thinking about, and remembering this for a long time. Beautifully read by Christian Barillas this is a rollercoaster of emotion, or maybe a train-wreck!.
The period of time and the events that it covered have always been interesting to me, and I have learned a lot by listening to this. I was inspired to but it by hearing great reviews for the TV series adaptation, and I will watch that now that I have the source material under my belt. I loved Tim, and loved and hated Hawkins in equal measure. The side characters are brilliant, as is the interwoven historical events surround McCarthy.
I am a bit devastated by the emotions at the end of the story, and I need to reflect some more I think.
