Renowned gamester and the first to admit that he is entirely void of a romantic disposition, Max Ravenscar regards all eligible females with indifference and unconcern.

But when he meets the woman his young cousin Adrian is bent on marrying - the beautiful Deborah Grantham, mistress of her aunt's gaming house - he finds that none of his experience in risk and gambling has prepared him for such a worthy opponent.

A different sort of story from the usual romance.

This has never been one of my favorite Georgette Heyer stories but Daphne Kouma gives such a spirited reading that she breathed new interest into it for me. Deception and intrigue weave a tangled plot and a series of misunderstandings further complicate things and the heroine’s efforts to sort it all out seem doomed.
A very lively performance which is great fun.

So enjoyable!

I’ve read this story several times, over several years. The writing is beautifully executed, and all the characters are engaging.
The narration was mostly excellent, bringing some of the secondary characters into marvellous relief. There were very occasional mispronunciations, which hardly mattered, but it was disappointing that Lucius Kennett - an Irishman, was given a Cockney accent, while Silas Wantage - Englishman, had a quasi-Irish accent. Isn’t this sort of issue supposed to be identified by the Director and Editor during the production process?
Not really fair to hold the narrator completely responsible for the error, especially as the expression of feelings was very well-rendered, despite the incongruent accents.

Thoroughly enjoyable presentation of Heyer at her best!

My favourite reading performance to date. The characters of this quintessential Heyer historical romance were beautifully performed, bringing the story to life in a delightful engaging interpretation almost exactly as I would have heard in my head had I read it from the page myself. I hope Daphne Kouma will perform other Heyer titles in future. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A great story

Georgette Heyer reminds me of Jane Austen in that the stories they wrote so many years ago are still topical today. Human relationships don’t change that much.
Very capably narrated with good voices.

Good story

The narration was the biggest problem. An excellent reader and good articulation but she is not mature enough to grasp the nuances and therefore it was irritating to listen to. More like a high school student who doesn’t yet understand different things about human relationships. She tried though. Disappointing to have so many words mispronounced. I kept listening because I wanted to hear the end of the story.

So many mispronunciations

The story is, of course, good; however, there are countless mispronunciations scattered throughout the recitation which jolts one out of the book’s world. The narrator otherwise does a good job with giving characters life.

Use of a forgotten Language

Slightly more risqué than the normal Heyer plot. Superb writing as usual from the Queen of regency romance.
