About this listen
Some truths are dangerous, certain secrets best concealed, and one story never should have been written at all.
Being an unwanted twin in the Imperial line of succession, Farilane became a scholar, adventurer, and in a time when reading was once more forbidden—a book hunter. Her singular obsession is finding the mythical Book of Brin, a tome not just lost but intentionally buried. Respected and beloved by the Teshlor Knights, not even their legendary skills can protect her for what she finds is more dangerous than what she sought.
From the three-time New York Times best-selling author Michael J. Sullivan, Farilane is the second novel in the Rise and Fall trilogy. This latest set of stories sits snugly between Legends of the First Empire and the Riyria books (Revelations and Chronicles). With this tale, Michael continues his tradition of unlikely heroes who must rise to the call when history knocks, demanding to be let in. This series will conclude in the summer of 2023 with the release of Esrahaddon, the final piece in a narrative that began in 2008 and contains 19 full-length novels spread across four series.

Best of the stories of Elan
I enjoyed every bit of this book, most particularly the ending., which was absolutely perfect! It's difficult to imagine that the forthcoming "Esrahaddon" will top this.
Once again Tim Gerard Reynold's narration was masterful, his voice lending exactly the right nuance to each character to make them walk off the page. Thank you Michael, Robyn and Tim.

Loved the story and narration
Disliked the author and author’s wife speaking at the start and the end. I’m listening to a fantasy story. I don’t want their input especially at the end. It ruin the ending.

amazing character developments
I am amazed by how invested you become with Farilane in such as short time. She has such a great personality. The new insights into Kyle's character are also great. Also I cried, alot.. but maybe in a good way

Best book yet
I think this is one of Michael J. Sullivan’s best books. Narration was on point, as usual. I really enjoyed the writing and how all the missing pieces linked to the past/future books.
The best bit was getting to see the real “Kyle” more and of course meeting Farilane. But also, I REALLY loved the symmetry of the ending to the “why” of the feathers. It just really tied in all the other poignant points from the other books (both past and future).

Admirable Farilane
This one had me in tears by the end. I enjoyed it more than the first in the series. Farilane is a mix of Sullivan heroines and whilst sometimes obnoxious her intelligence and keen observations are admirable - it's her curiosity that gets her into trouble but she is a true scholar and adventurer and any reader has to love her deep love of books and writing but also how she just gets things done - determination! This series is in the middle of the Legends and Riyria and it's interesting to piece the Elon history together but especially to see how things change over time - to see how depending on who records history or how it is or isn't recorded the future can be shaped in a certain way (which may not be right). The fact that writing is outlawed means that people don't believe some facts of their history including Farilane - then again, “The sad part is,” Kile went on, “the more we learn, the less magic there is in the world, and the less enchanting life becomes.”
Good book - onto the next and once again excellent narration by TGR!
