About this listen

Since the 1970s, FantasticLand has been the theme park where "Fun is Guaranteed!" But when a hurricane ravages the Florida coast and isolates the park, the employees find it anything but fun. Five weeks later, the authorities who rescue the survivors encounter a scene of horror. Photos soon emerge online of heads on spikes outside of rides and viscera and human bones littering the gift shops, breaking records for hits, views, likes, clicks, and shares. How could a group of survivors, mostly teenagers, commit such terrible acts?

Presented as a fact-finding investigation and a series of first-person interviews, FantasticLand pieces together the grisly series of events. Park policy was that the mostly college-aged employees surrender their electronic devices to preserve the authenticity of the FantasticLand experience. Cut off from the world and left on their own, the teenagers soon form rival tribes who viciously compete for food, medicine, social dominance, and even human flesh. This new social network divides the ravaged dreamland into territories ruled by the Pirates, the ShopGirls, the Freaks, and the Mole People. If meticulously curated online personas can replace private identities, what takes over when those constructs are lost?

FantasticLand is a modern take on Lord of the Flies meets Battle Royale that probes the consequences of a social civilization built online.

Left me spiralling

This book is so enthralling and left me spiralling about myself and the characters. I had to keep reminding myself this didn’t actually happen. I would highly recommend the audiobook version of this book. It just made it feel so real

Amazing!

I was blown away by this one. The story was great, very relatable. The first person account structure was excellent, made even better by the utterly brilliant voice actors. Truly the best audiobook I’ve listened to. Highly recommend.

Excellent

Excellent book. A quick listen as it hooks you in. The story is laid out by people being interviewed. It is a very good way to tell this sort of modern Lord of the Flies kind story. This feels like it will be picked up for a tv series eventually.

the writing

probably needed another male and female voice actor to break up the different characters

Humanity is truly terrifying

The thing I loved most about this book was how it made me feel - it made me feel human. I experienced anger and was sickened by the acts portrayed, but it wasn't that which hit me hardest. It was the sadness. I was sadden. Just very, very, deeply sad.

Much of my emotional response can be attributed to the narrators. Truly just the most amazing acting. I found myself crying multiple times throughout and I don't think the impact would have been nearly as strong had I read this book on paper. This book was made to be consumed with your ears, not your eyes.

Other things I loved:

*The setting
*Interview 7 - it broke me. Literal sobbing.
*The tribes
*The Freaks! Ingenious! Team Freaks all the way.
*Also, Team Shop Girls. Biggest badasses out of the lot, if you ask me.
*The hotel and The Warthogs. Hella creepy and soooo well done.
*Sophie
*The Med Girls
*Parlay 😂
*The narrators.. They were so good, I have to mention it again.

My only major let down was interview 22. I didn't like how it was handled and I think maybe the author tried too hard. I think it would have been more impactful had he stayed silent or just not been included at all. Keep us guessing about his character. Would have been epic.

Other than that, I loved how this book did leave us guessing in regards to what really happened and who is telling the truth. It lets us make up our own mind, which is very cool.

I truly hope humanity would fare better in the real world.

Loved it.
