Hvert år hører tusindvis af mennesker over hele landet nemlig Fangekoret, der således er mange af fangernes eneste udgangsmulighed. I spidsen står ildsjaelen Louise Adrian. For fangerne er hun både mor og uopnåelig kaerlighed, og så er hun en af Kriminalforsorgens eneste dokumenterede succeser igennem mange år. For når Fangekorets medlemmer kommer på fri fod, klarer de sig langt bedre end deres "kolleger" i faengslet. I bogen fortaeller fangerne om deres barske vej ind i faengslet, mens man følger dem rundt på landevejen på turne i landets kirker.
