About this listen

THE SUNDAY TIMES Music Book of the Year

Faith, Hope and Carnage is a meditation on faith, art, music, freedom, grief and love.

Created from more than forty hours of intimate conversations with the journalist Seán O’Hagan, it is a profoundly thoughtful exploration, in Cave’s own words, of what really drives his life and creativity. The audiobook has been recorded so that the listener, especially when playing through headphones, sits between Cave and O’Hagan.

The book draws candidly on Cave’s life, from his early childhood to the present day, his loves, his work ethic and his dramatic transformation in recent years. The audiobook features 16 musical codas and elements from the Carnage, Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen albums. It also includes an exclusive, additional 12-minute conversation between Cave and O’Hagan about the production of the recording.

Faith, Hope and Carnage offers ladders of hope and inspiration from a true creative visionary.

Nick’s Mind

In this world of fast statements and homogenised ideas here at last is the thoughtful response of someone who examines life, death and all the mess in between. I listened with thirst and have finished this book knowing I will listen again. Not immediately, but when the time is right. How refreshing it has been to listen to authenticity and maturity. Very grateful for this book on so many levels. Thank you.

Life changing

A beautiful, life changing book with Nick Cave showing extraordinary vulnerability and insight.

It is absolutely next level compared with many other surface level ‘rock star’ books.

I had the hard cover but the audiobook is a much better way to hear the interplay and discussions unfold.

Beautiful, Poetic, Raw

I rarely leave book reviews, but I just had to get my thoughts out there to the world. I listened to this audiobook over a few days, and I just couldn't stop listening to it. Nick, you have a way of talking, like a poem, so articulate, you make sense of things, of things that make little sense, like religion, life and especially death. Also, Sean as the interviewer is brilliant and calming. This book moved me. Thank you, Nick and Sean, for sharing these intimate conversations with the world!

Brilliant

With the recent bereavement of my own juvenile son, i found this book enormously comforting, intriguing & helpful through my own sad reality. Marvelous flowing questions & direction from Sean, what a pro & such meaningful honest answers from NC.
Im certain to listen to this book again & again.
I feel my sadness has somewhat been lifted by this work.
Thankyou Mr Cave & Mr O'Hagan.

Complete engrossing

I didn’t want to miss a word. The way Nick Cave can bring you along into his thought processing and carefully articulate where he’s at, without making you feel like you have to think like him, is tremendous. I simply cannot recommend this book enough - along with the treasure trove he’s created musically over his lifetime of being an artist.

So wonderful to hear the words

I’m a long term Nick Cave fan, since the Birthday Party days and am always keen to see what he is up to. This was a great book to listen to. Like me and many of his fans I guess, he’s older and wiser but more than that. He feels more authentic and loved his openness to many difficult and normally private topics. So wonderful to hear their voices though sometimes it felt read as we’re not hearing the original phone conversations. I imaging it being difficult to read in book form. I know I will listen to this again!
