About this listen

Revised and updated with over 600,000 copies sold.

Pia Mellody creates a framework for identifying codependent thinking, emotions and behaviour and provides an effective approach to recovery. Mellody sets forth five primary adult symptoms of this crippling condition, then traces their origin to emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical and sexual abuses that occur in childhood. Central to Mellody's approach is the concept that the codependent adult's injured inner child needs healing. Recovery from codependence, therefore, involves clearing up the toxic emotions left over from these painful childhood experiences.

Poignant insights worth hearing, narrator not so good

This book dives straight into explanation of how codependence develops and does a great job of covering many causes and reasons for adult codependence- I found it incredibly helpful and poignant.
It was hard to listen to the narrator because of the constant race pace compared to thoughtful content. They’d be great at calling a horse race vs speaking to mindfulness and healing content

Narrator takes away from story

This book is so great but the narrator is so robotic and takes away from the content massively

Accurate and rough

I guess having the realisation that the wreck of your life is the result of a disease is both heartening and devastating. Not the most optimistic book, but probably like any medicine, tastes gross on the way down but benefits long term.

Terribly monotonous narration ruins an excellent book

Pia Mellody has done brilliant work in discovering and sharing her understanding of codependence, what causes particular behaviours, and how to recover from the disorder. This book in particular is excellent, and one of the most useful in my experience.
Self improvement and in fact facing codependence is already challenging and hard work - the emotionless robotic narration of this otherwise fascinating and helpful book is a another senseless obstacle.

content is insightful

the recording has echoes, voice is monotone, sounds robotic like it's a computer that's talking
