About this listen
It's late autumn in Edinburgh and late autumn in the career of Detective Inspector Rebus. As he tries to tie up some loose ends before retirement, a murder case intrudes. A dissident Russian poet has been found dead in what looks like a mugging gone wrong. By apparent coincidence a delegation of Russian businessmen is in town - and everyone is determined that the case should be closed quickly and clinically.
But the further they dig, the more Rebus and DS Siobhan Clarke become convinced that they are dealing with something more than a random attack - especially after a particularly nasty second killing. Meanwhile a brutal and premeditated assault on a local gangster sees Rebus in the frame. Has the inspector taken a step too far in tying up those loose ends? Only a few days shy of the end to his long, inglorious career, will Rebus even make it that far?

Nice twist
Nice twist at the end, made me laugh. There’s so much more I’d like to read Rebus think about.

Rebus' exit, but, as we know, only back stage!
Rankin excels himself in this 'final' Rebus but his exit is not out of the theatre, just back stage.
My first Rebus audio-book and James Macpherson does not disappoint.
Backdrop of a Russian poet murdered and conspiracy around Russian oligarch money but the double murder turns out to be domestic violence and then subsequent collateral damage.
Great interplay between him and Siobhan as the balance of power(?) shifts.
I have read about half of Rebus in a somewhat random order and I keep threatening to start at the beginning and work through them all. One day...........!
Masterpieces of character, plot and setting, exemplified in this one.

Twist in the tale.
An entertaining instalment with a cracker of an ending. Exit Music? I think it’s just the start for Rebus!
